arbitrary ruminations

well...it's been 8 years since i have owned cable television. really, i have never even been able to get local channels with the rabbit ears (i think they're a joke anyway). i decided to celebrate my cable sobriety with a little indulgence so, i called our local cable co. which by the way also provides my high speed internet to see about getting the basic basic basic dealio. It's 10 bucks...even i can swing that! Guess what? If you get cable, it drops your internet bill $10. HEH...it must be fate because i got cable and i'm not paying one red cent more than i was already paying!

when mr. cable man came to hook me up, i asked how many channels i'd be getting and he said about 75. WHOA, thought I, but what i said was "this is the basic basic basic cable your wiring me for right?" and he said "yep". I'm not arguing but something doesn't seem right. maybe this is some kind of promotional deal to get me hooked on all those upper channels and then they'll come snatch it away and laugh as i go thru DT's.

i confirmed with him 2 more times that i was paying for the basic set up and after he left, i settled back to watch and watch and watch all of my channels that count all the way up to 98 including HBO which, just so you are all aware NEVER, and I mean NEVER has a worthwhile show on!

so it has been 2 weeks now with the demon in my living room and i sit on my ass for hours and start feeling guilt about my slackness until i jump up, run around the block and do the dishes so that i feel justified when i sit back down for a few more hours.

i knew i was really in big trouble when i recognized that i was watching some brightly lit commercial with my mouth hanging open. i mean real life, slack jawed, on the verge of droolin, mouth hanging open!! i've improved my television watching skills since then though, so that happens alot less frequently now. they say, "it's practice that makes perfect!" and i believe them.
